COP26 Side Event: Commonwealth Collaboration to Accelerate Methane Reductions in the Petroleum Sector

  • 8 Nov, 2021
  • 2:30 pm

Methane is the second largest greenhouse gas with a global warming effect over 80 times greater than CO2. More than 30% of the current rise in temperatures is due to this potent gas. To secure global net zero by 2050 and keep 1.5 degrees within reach, urgent reductions
are needed.

Governments have a critical role to play in making this a reality. This high-level side event will be a critical dialogue for Commonwealth countries and partners to:
• Explore areas where greater support and cooperation is needed;
• Identify opportunities for collaboration, including a proposed action group under the Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transitions (CSET) Agenda

Speakers:

Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth
Hon Min Stuart Richard Young, Minister, Energy and Energy Industries, Trinidad and Tobago
Naadira Ogeer, Economic Advisor, TONR, Commonwealth Secretariat
Giulia Ferrini, Programme Officer, UN Environment Programme
Chair: Dr Ruth Kattumuri, Senior Director, EYSD, Commonwealth Secretariat
